What do I do when a death occurs

If someone dies at home and their death was expected

Call the family doctor and nearest relative.

Having spoken with the GP practice and when you feel ready to do so, you can then contact a funeral director to arrange the collection.

If the death was expected, for example due to a terminal illness, in most instances the doctor will issue a medical certificate of the cause of death to allow the death to be registered at the Registry Office. A Death Certificate will then be provided.

If someone dies at home and their death was unexpected

Call 999 immediately and explain to the operator on the situation.

The police will be called to do a routine visit. They may ask questions regarding the death which may be used to help the coroner to understand the cause of death. They will then instruct you on what the next steps will be.

If someone dies in hospital

The hospital bereavement officer will help you the process of dealing with the death, They will instruct you on what you need to do next. You will then need to book an appointment to register the death where they will issue the correct paperwork to arrange the funeral. Once you feel ready you can contact your funeral director to arrange the funeral.

What does a simple cremation offer

A direct cremation is a funeral with no service, and no mourners can attend. The deceased is taken through the chapel and placed on the catafalque, just like an attended funeral. There is the same level of dignity and respect as a standard funeral, A direct cremation is cheaper than a regular funeral as you do not get the full time slot at crematorium. The ashes can be returned to have a service or celebration in your own time, Alternately we can arrange for the ashes to be scattered in the crematorium memorial gardens.
